Valuing Nature: A Survey of the Non-Market Valuation Literature

چکیده

The use of geo-spatial differentiation in resource economics has become more widespread in recent years, particularly in the urban and real estate literature. However, previous to use in environmental economics, geo-spatial characteristics were used in international trade and theories of industrial concentration (Krugman, 1998). Geographic Information Systems, or GIS, is a database management system with a spatial reference. This spatial reference is commonly used to " geocode " data; that is, to assign a latitude and longitude based on the street address of the data point. An introduction to GIS as a geo-spatial technique can be found in Star and Estes (1990). used GIS in their analyses of real estate. A more recent paper by Clapp, Rodriguez, and Thrall (1997) both surveys the literature and discusses the advantages, disadvantages, and uses of GIS. Clapp et al. divided recent empirical studies employing GIS into two categories: those using explicit distance as a proxy for transaction costs and those using spatial area characteristics. utilized a straight-line distance measure to the central business district of their studies, as well as other important locations. Later studies that also used explicit distances measures also included spatial autoregressive processes (SAR). The SAR technique tests for and corrects spatial autocorrelation by calculating distances from each transaction to every other transaction. These tests suggest omitted spatial variables and indicate that substantial statistical gains can be obtained by explicitly modeling these processes. Pace and Gilley (1997) employed a standard hedonic model and compared it to a hedonic model with a method of weighted neighborhood geographical areas. They found these geographic variables changed all estimated coefficients by a large amount and increased the R-squared statistic significantly. Earlier, Dubin (1988) found that the consequences of ignoring spatial autocorrelation included: inefficient OLS estimates, biased standard errors, and inaccurate

A systematic review of the reliability and validity of discrete choice experiments in valuing non-market environmental goods.

While discrete choice experiments (DCEs) are increasingly used in the field of environmental valuation, they remain controversial because of their hypothetical nature and the contested reliability and validity of their results. We systematically reviewed evidence on the validity and reliability of environmental DCEs from the past thirteen years (Jan 2003-February 2016). 107 articles met our inc...

Valuing Recreational Benefits in an Aquatic Ecosystem Area with Contingent Valuation Method: Case of ShirinSou Wetland, Iran

In this study, the recreational value of ShirinSou Wetland of the Kabodarahang County in Hamadan Province, Iran was estimated and the visitors' willingness to Pay (WTP) was measured by using Contingent Valuation Method (CVM) and One and One Half Bound model (OOHB) dichotomous choice (DC) questionnaire. The results show that 81 percent of investigating individuals will pay for recreational usage...

Exotic electricity options and the valuation of electricity generation and transmission assets

This paper presents and applies a methodology for valuing electricity derivatives by constructing replicating portfolios from electricity futures and the risk free asset. Futures based replication is argued to be made necessary by the non-storable nature of electricity, which rules out the traditional spot market, storage-based method of valuing commodity derivatives. Using the futures based ap...

Infrastructure Preference and Value Among Transportation Cyclists in the U.S

A decade of surging bicycle use has attracted little research seeking to measure bicycle utility, infrastructure preferences, and the tension between transportation budgets versus the demands of cyclists, pedestrians, and motorists. A review of the literature shows only one study applying non-market valuation tools to study this issue and demographic surveys tracking gender, age, and income hav...

Ecosystem valuation : Some principles and a partial application

Understanding the economic value of nature and the services it provides to humanity has become increasingly important for local, national and global policy and decision making. However, problems arise in that it is difficult to obtain meaningful values for goods and services that ecosystems provide which have no formal market, or are characteristically intangible. Additional problems occur when...

Valuation and Market- Based Pricing of Economic and Ecosystem Services of Water Resources

This chapter presents a comprehensive review of valuation of water. Though existing literature has a large number of papers on the significant attempts at valuing water, a number of publications only consider certain specific aspects of water pricing, rarely attempting a comprehensive review. Water pricing, whether by government mandate or in practice, has to take into consideration a host of c...
